Rupikonna - Ähtäri Zoo

Bufo bufo

Common toads can be found in Finland’s southern and central parts, and in fewer numbers even beyond the Arctic Circle. The common toad spends the winter in hibernation, starting from September and ending in April. The oldest common toad on record reached an impressive age of 54 years.

The toads’ breeding season begins immediately after hibernation, and toads gather at their old breeding sites from previous years. Toads lay their eggs around water plants in ponds, bays in lakes, or other similar locations. Toadlets grow to a size of up to 2–3 cm during their first summer. Common toads reach sexual maturity at 3–4 years of age.

Conservation status

LC stands for “least concern.” The species is well-known, and the population is abundant or stable.
