European Badger

Meles meles

Badgers may use the same setts, or dens, for decades. Badger communities may contain several adult badgers, and the largest burrowed dens may host several badger families.

European badgers choose a slope where they will dig their tunnel. The setts, which are constantly expanded, can have a tunnel network that is hundreds of meters long. The tunnels have several exit holes to the surface. Badgers use moss and plants to create a soft cover for the floor in their larger den chambers. When they awake from hibernation, they throw out their “cushions”, which reveals the nest they were using.

European badgers prefer broad-leaved forests where there are plenty of insects, worms, berries, and voles to eat.

Conservation status

LC stands for “least concern.” The species is well-known, and the population is abundant or stable.
