European Roe Deer

Capreolus capreolus

It is possible that European roe deer have been part of Finland’s wilderness for centuries, but the earliest confirmed sighting dates back to 1903. The roe deer has been said to be the prettiest deer, and for good reason. For zoos the roe deer is a very demanding animal and difficult to keep.

Here’s how you know a European roe deer

The antlers on bucks have upward points. The animal’s back does not reach higher than 75 cm. The European roe deer’s color is brown with a hint of yellow. The short tail and the area around it are both white.

Conservation status

LC stands for “least concern.” The species is well-known, and the population is abundant or stable.
