Northern Raven

Corvus corax

The raven is an intellectual among birds

Ravens and other species in the Corvidae family are some of the most intelligent bird species. Ravens have an excellent memory, and they can remember hundreds of food caches that they make in the autumn. They can also recognize the faces of people who have caused them trouble before, and they even recognize themselves in the mirror.

Birds in the Corvidae family know how to use various tools, and they take advantage of other animals and people when looking for food. Ravens taunt a predator that is feasting on a carcass, and once the predator loses its focus, the ravens take their share of the meat. Ravens have been known even to check if there is anything caught in fishers’ longlines.

Ravens can live for decades. In addition to ravens, only the willow ptarmigan, rock ptarmigan, and the gyrfalcon know how to survive the winter of the Finnish arctic. The Northmen in Sompio used to say that the raven “was made of all things evil, with a beak made of the devil’s axe.” In the Nordic folk tradition, the raven is the sign of the God of Death, one-eyed Odin of Valhalla.

Conservation status

LC stands for “least concern.” The species is well-known, and the population is abundant or stable.
