Pikkupanda - Ähtäri Zoo

Red Panda

Ailurus fulgens

The red panda is at a high risk of extinction in the wild, and transfers between zoos are a way to ensure that the red panda genome is not lost. Conservation includes careful logging of populations and genomes, and transfers between zoos are coordinated by the conservation programs. The red panda can only be seen in the wild in its native surroundings in the Himalayas at 2,200–4,800 meters in southern China and northern Myanmar. The population is diminishing without fail because the red panda is threatened, for example, by poaching and loss of habitat due to urbanization.

Conservation status

Vulnerable (VU). The species is under a high risk of endangerment in the wild.
